In response to Mr. William Bennett's article "Leave Marriage Alone" (June 3, 1996), I contend that "God made everybody." He states that "same-sex couples would shatter the conventional definition of marriage, etc." Who's definition? Is he insinuating that he has the only definition of marriage, that God himself told him who is and who isn't deserving of this union?
If same-sex marriage is, as Mr. Andrew Sullivan so eloquently states in his article "Let Gays Marry" (June 3, 1996), a union between "the sons and daughters of countless mothers and fathers, with all the weaknesses and strengths and hopes of everybody else", who could fault that logic? Is Mr. Bennett so insecure in his own masculinity that he has to demean anyone who is not a white male American Christian? Again, as Mr. Sullivan states, "No one has any more of a choice to be gay than to be black or white or male or female."
And who wouldn't, given the choice, chose to be a white male Christian American? They own everything. They govern the world. They create destinies for millions of people around the globe.
And on the other hand, who is more deserving than to experience the joys of marriage than two people who love and respect each other? Who is better qualified to raise descent citizens of the world than two people who value love, liberty and respect for the individual? God made everybody . . . males and females, blacks and whites, liberals and conservative, gays and lesbians. Who are we to dispute His infinite wisdom?
